Come back for the next installment of Ask Adam! It will discuss if running a furnace fan is the same as an air exchanger. For all the pollutants in your home, surely there have to be more lurking outside. Is it really such a good idea to force outdoor air into your home over and over again? Before outdoor air it supplies enters your air ducts, an air exchanger passes it through a filter. Only the fresh outdoor air moves through your home; the particles it had been carrying get left behind. Air exchangers filter all the air they supply.

Think about it: most common allergens are airborne. Dust, mold, pollen, dander—all that junk floats through the air! We tend to worry about allergens a lot outside, but we often neglect the ones in our homes. Airborne allergies can be a serious problem—especially for those of us with asthma or other respiratory conditions. Fortunately, also like other pollutants, air exchangers offer a solution. All the pollen, dander, and dust hanging in clouds over your head gets vented outdoors.

To ventilate your home properly, make sure to supply just the right amount of fresh air continuously all year long. Also make sure to have continuous exhaust with an equal amount of indoor air to help prevent any stale in your home. An exception can be when windows or doors are opened as a way of ventilating. When this happens, you can turn the air exchanger off because there is no advantage to over-ventilate your home. By doing this, you can dry out the air in your home and use excessive amounts of electrical energy.

Besides providing fresh air for your home, air exchangers also help to remove any pollutants from the air as well. Air exchanger filters ensure the air within the home is kept clean and fresh while still remaining energy efficient. They are also able to remove hot moist air from your home, which then helps to reduce the risk of mold and fungi to grow. The structure of your home is also protected because the moist air that can damage it is removed.

Air exchangers can be energy efficient.
